In our country, family planning isn’t actually between just the couple- the parents, relatives, neighbour aunties…all have a tip or an advice to give. Now in this crazy world, comes one more aspect- the child needs consent to being born! Amazed? Don’t be! Meet Mumbai resident Raphael Samuel, who is suing his parents for giving birth to him without his consent.
This young 27 year old, begs to differ from the rules of the world- that one is indebted to have an offspring! Moreover, he is a part of #Anti-natalist movement which says that having children is morally wrong. Nope, he isn’t really against his parents or doing all this as a result of traumatic childhood or anything. Despite having a great relationship with his parents, he still wants to sue them. And believe me when I say, he has some solid reasons.
Samuel says, “I love my parents, and we have a great relationship, but they had me for their joy and their pleasure. My life has been amazing, but I don’t see why I should put another life through the rigmarole of school and finding a career, especially when they didn’t ask to exist.”
Samuel has a Facebook page, called Nihilanand, on which he regularly posts anti-natalist material for his followers and other member to see and ponder upon. He has made some valid arguments for his people to understand his point of view.
‘If parents truly know what is good for their children… why did they have them?’
‘Isn’t forcing a child into this world and then forcing it to have a career kidnapping and slavery?’
‘The only reason your children are facing problems is because you had them’.
‘A good parent puts the child above his wants and needs… but the child itself is a want of the parent’.
He is so sure of his ideology that he has created #ParentsAreHypocrites handle and Childfree India movement. It is not just him, there are many millennials joining him in this movement. Their thinking is pretty straight-forward that having children is a strain on Earth’s resources and one avoid reproduction for environmental reasons. One of the supporter, activist, Pratima Naik, says: ‘We don’t want to impose our beliefs on anyone, but more people need to consider why having a child in the world right now isn’t right.’
Samuels’ page, Childfree India has been asking these proactive questions that it certainly makes one sit and reconsider life choices.
‘Should we continue to bring more children in this world and accelerate the process of environmental and social degradation?
‘Do you think existence is pain, and not bringing a child into this world, is a guaranteed way to avoid unnecessary suffering to the child?
‘We are a group of people who have decided not to reproduce. We are Childfree Indians!’
Whether we agree with Samuel or not isn’t the debate! But we should definitely give a thought to the arguments he’s giving! In this filth-filled world, is the safest option that we should ultimately go childfree?
Well, I think it’s up to our choices, either we mend our ways or let’s not get anymore souls in this world to suffer!
